Chronic Respiratory Diseases as a Risk Factor for Herpes Zoster Infection
CONCLUSIONS: In a standard clinical practice setting, the most prevalent respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD and lung cancer) are related to a higher risk of HZ and PHN. These data are fundamental to assess the potential impact of vaccination in this population.PMID:37734964 | DOI:10.1016/j.arbres.2023.08.010

Position statement on infection screening, prophylaxis, and vaccination in pediatric patients with rheumatic diseases and immunosuppressive therapies, part 2: infection prophylaxis
Conclusion: Based on current evidence and a Delphi process, we provided consensus and updated recommendations on prophylaxis and treatment of infections to guide those caring for pediatric rheumatology patients. What is Known: •Data largely derived from adults find that infectious diseases and related complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with immune-mediated rheumatic diseases. •It is crucial to be aware of the preventive measures that should be implemented to prevent these infections in children, although most guidelines are often extrapolated from adult cases. What is New: •In the ...

Surveying a Sample of the Spanish Ophthalmologic Community about Vaccination against Herpes Zoster
Vaccines (Basel). 2023 May 5;11(5):952. doi: 10.3390/vaccines11050952.ABSTRACTThere are currently two authorized vaccines against herpes zoster (HZ) that have been shown to be safe and effective in its prevention: Zostavax, a zoster vaccine live (ZVL), and Shingrix, a recombinant zoster Vaccine (RZV). Because ophthalmologists work with vision-threatening complications of zoster, such as herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO), they are in a good position to advocate for vaccination. Our aim was to determine the current knowledge among Spanish ophthalmologists about the effectiveness of the available vaccines against HZ. A Google ...

Epidemiology of Herpes Zoster in the pre-vaccination era: establishing the baseline for vaccination programme's impact in Spain
ConclusionOf all patients hospitalised with HZ, those with greater risk of mortality or readmission belonged to the groups prioritised by the current vaccination recommendations of the Spanish Ministry of Health. Our study provided relevant information on clinical aspects of HZ and established the base for future assessments of vaccination policies.PMID:36820639 | PMC:PMC9951257 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.8.2200390

Status of Herpes Zoster and Herpes Zoster Vaccines in 2023: A position paper
Rev Esp Quimioter. 2023 Feb 8:molero08feb2023. doi: 10.37201/req/004.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerpes zoster infection (HZ) is an important public health problem due to its high incidence and frequent complications, especially post-herpetic neuropathy . The incidence of HZ increases with age and is more frequent in immunocompromised patients. It is estimated that at least 60,000 people develop HZ each year in Spain. The usual forms of HZ are so clinically characteristic that they do not usually require microbiological confirmation, which is reserved for cases without cutaneous manifestations or with atypical pres...
